Turkey, Mersin
On Wednesday, a ship sailing from Turkey's southern Mersin province to Lebanon with 23 truckloads of humanitarian aid departed.
The 23-truck fleet carrying 512 tons of food, according to the provincial governor's office, was assembled on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's orders and coordinated by the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
Deputy Governor Ibrahim Kucuk stated that this ship is the fourth to be sent as part of a humanitarian effort for Lebanon while speaking at a send-off ceremony.
Kucuk said he hoped the assistance will help, noting that the Lebanese people have a hard time meeting their necessities.
Lebanon has been dealing with a serious economic crisis since late 2019 that includes a significant currency depreciation as well as shortages of fuel and medical supplies.
90% of the value of the Lebanese currency has been lost, making it harder for citizens to access necessities like food, water, healthcare, and education. Fuel shortages also frequently cause severe power outages.
According to UN estimates, almost 80% of Lebanon's population now lives below the poverty line, with 36% experiencing extreme poverty.
